Introduction
The first time I really started to get into Deep Rock Galactic, I thought I had the fundamentals down within the first few minutes. Drop into the mine, mine some minerals, shoot some bugs, return to the station. Easy. Then the mine changed.
A tunnel I had previously taken suddenly disappeared, an entire swarm appeared from a place I couldn’t see, and we began arguing about whether to call the care pod or keep exploring. That’s when Deep Rock Galactic began to click. It’s not merely a first-person shooter with some mining thrown in. The terrain, the classes, the goals, the enemies, and the teamwork are constantly interacting. And when things go awry, they tend to go awfully awry.
Inside Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic is a multiplayer first-person shooter that revolves around a crew of space pilots who work treacherous mining missions on Hoxxes IV. The game can be played solo or cooperatively by four players, with randomly generated caves that can be completely changed by digging and combat. The setting gives the game a strange but effective identity.
You’re there to work, but your workplace happens to contain huge underground caverns, valuable minerals, dangerous enemies, dangerous plants, and enough drops to die for. The game features four separate classes, each of which approaches the caves differently and whose gear becomes significantly more useful if you work together as a team rather than treating each class like a solo soldier. The classes are scout, gunner, engineer, and driller.
The gunner is a heavily armed and defensive team supporter, the engineer is capable of deploying automated turrets and creating locations, the driller can drill tunnels through the stone, and the scout has quick mobility, can reach otherwise inaccessible places, and can illuminate dark places with flares. The work involves traversing these randomly generated caves.
No two expeditions will ever be the same as one may go through narrow tunnels and another might open to a huge cavern with the goal hovering far overhead.
That’s where the scout’s utility really becomes apparent, as it can quickly reach difficult areas with a grappling hook and light the ceilings to reveal threats and give everyone else a clear view. Gunners are best served by having a shield and stacking up on their weapons. Engineers create elaborate gaming machines with turrets and platforms that help bridge the gaps in the caves.
The driller can punch right through the stone walls to create shortcuts and clear obstacles. And yes, sometimes the drill is the solution. The ability to punch through stone is a way to make a good idea great, and the game encourages different classes as a way to discover different approaches.
The four classes give teams a clear reason to work together, but the caves and destructible terrain make for a dynamic adventure.
Even if you pick up all the essentials quickly, there’s always the potential for a different approach, a different line of attack, a different set of enemies, and a strange cave from the last expedition you went on.
Gameplay
The game begins on the space rig, where each player picks their class, customized their gear, and choose a mission. Once on the ground, an objective must be completed, which could involve mining a certain resource, eliminating a particular target, or delivering equipment, after which point you have to make your way to the extraction point. The caves themselves are a vital part of gameplay because their layouts will not ever be identical, thanks to how they’re generated procedurally.
One expedition may lead through long hallways and through narrow tunnels to a goal, or another may lead to an enormous cave with its objective stationed way above the ground.
That’s when you start to see the value of the different classes, as the scout can quickly reach every corner of a cavern with a grapple gun and then light the area from above to clear the way for your team. The gunner can reduce the swarm of enemies with a massive gun and guard the exit with a shield. The engineer can place powerful turrets and build tracks that help get everyone where they need to be.
And the driller has the ability to create tunnels through the stone for the entire team to get through easier. Sometimes the drill is the answer. Making tunnels in the earth helps in navigating the game worlds and can make for interesting mechanics and strategies.
The four classes create a straightforward reason for the team to work together, but the game always has something on its mind, and the challenge of exploring dynamically generated caves keeps things fresh.
Even after you get the hang of what you’re doing, there’s always a new place to go, a different way to think, and another game to begin.

Why the Game Is Still Fun
Although a normal enemy attack is easy to handle, the arrival of a swarm in an enormous cavern with poor visibility is a different story. Suddenly, the engineer has to make walls, the scout has to search for the swarm with a flare gun, and the rest of the team has to equip shields and prepare the explosives. Every class has a role, but that doesn’t mean that all games are smooth sailing.
If anything, that’s the best part of the game, because players have to communicate and improvise.
Sometimes, everyone will split up and get captured, and other times, the party will find itself in a tight space and have to search their resources. This is where the game shines best, and the versatility of the game world allows some classes to shine by clearing long corridors that other classes can’t reach. It’s also great fun to make tunnels with the driller, and it’s always interesting to replay levels with various classes and different equipment.
Overall, the game offers an experience that is best with three or four players, with the four classes used as a point of comparison and different cave systems helping to generate surprising new experiences.
